Like many of us I created a TikTok account over lockdown. I made a couple of videos (the kids made a few more) and never really paid much more attention to it unless Gabe (10) sent me a video.
Fast forward to this week and on Monday I recommended that a client share his Reels to TikTok and on Tuesday I watched a TikTok masterclass hosted by Latte and Live.
Now I have decided to fully jump on that Gen Z bandwagon.
If you’re anything like me you love Instagram Reels and it’s pretty much a whole platform of Reels. It’s getting more and more popular all the time, with more than 3 billion downloads in July 2021.
And it also turns out that folks in the UK love it too, spending the most average time a month on the platform.
And I think it’s a platform that hasn’t really been utilised by businesses as much as others, but that’s just IMHO.
What have I learnt?
Now that TikTok is more on my radar there are a couple of things I’ve picked up on and taken notice of that I wouldn’t have done before:
The Algorithm: the algorithm is alive and well on TikTok to make sure you see content that you want to see (or at least that’s the aim). Currently my account shows me lots of football content (ta Gabe). I need to spend some time following accounts that are useful for me or are the accounts of users who are my ideal client.
(A bit of algorithm training is advised)
Hashtags: Hashtags are still very important, so use them on your videos. TikTok has specific platform based hashtags that have a suffix of -tok. Find the one that is relevant to your niche and use it. And you don’t need to use as many hashtags as you would on Instagram.
(A bit of hashtag research is still advised)
Favourites: similar to Instagram Reels you can save audio. In TikTok you save to favourites. Also similar to Instagram, trending audio can really help your reach.
(A bit of audio research is advised)
Link In Bio: TikTok doesn’t like it when you instruct your audience to leave the platform. Instead of using the Link In Bio call to action, instruct your audience to ‘scroll left’. This will take them to your profile page where your link is.
Repurposing: It’s totally fine to repurpose Reels to TikTok and vice versa. However, neither platform likes to see the other’s watermark on the video. As explained in this Reel by @brock11johnson there are websites you can use to remove the watermark
👉🏻To remove the Insta logo use InstaFinsta.com
👉🏻To remove the TikTok logo use SnapTik.app
Plan A: download all my reels, remove the watermark, post to TikTok
Plan A2: create business TikTok account
Plan A3: Keep learning about the platform, share updates with you and have fun with it
Are you on TikTok? Let me know your username and I’ll give you a follow, mine is @alternativesocialuk
