Flashback to the time I took a few tentative steps into the world of Instagram videos!
At the time, featuring myself on social media as a still photo was one thing. I was totally ok with that. But a video, of me, talking. I didn’t like that.
I thought I sounded weird, I looked weird (I felt wonky). I felt like a div talking to no-one.
But is it really no-one? Well, not if people watch it, right?
The main thing for me though, was that recording a video and then uploading that video, was a HUGE step out of my comfort zone.
As an introvert by nature, it also zapped quite a bit of (nervous) energy.
Videos are a useful format on social media though. They can help build familiarity and allow your personality to shine through.
However, it’s worth remembering that the video doesn’t have to be of you.
Different video formats
There are loads of subjects you can film and loads of ways you can present them:
Stories – short videos you can upload that will stay on your profile for 24 hours (unless you add them to highlights)
Reels – short videos you can upload and make super fancy that will stay on your profile in the Reels tab and on your grid
Live – videos that you can add to your feed (and you can collaborate with other users on these).
Showing up on video with the right energy
These days I find it loads easier to hop on a live or create a talking story or a simple reel. That just comes with practice.
One thing I do make sure of though, is that I’m in the right frame of mind to create these so that I’m showing up with the right energy.
And if I’m not feeling it, then it’s OK. I can create them later when I do.
