We do love social media but we’ve also all heard horror stories. Cyber-bullying, trolls, the spread of misinformation. But it’s worth acknowledging that social media isn’t actually the cause of these things, people are.

And for every negative aspect of how people use social media to the detriment of others, there’s a lot of positivity that comes out of it also.

Here are 3 reasons to love social media (IMHO).

It helps us form connections and create communities.

Nobody supports you like a social media friend you’ve never met, right? I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of some amazing online communities. They have helped me through early motherhood and through my journey as a freelancer.

I have tended to join communities in Facebook groups and there are a lot of them. But once you find the right one for you, it’s wonderful. And if you can’t find the right group, create your own!

It’s free.

Yep, for organic social media promotion, all major platforms are currently completely free to use. So that’s Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter all totally free and available for you to promote your business through. I’m not saying it’s easy.

You do have to put the work in to grow your accounts and make conversions. But with the right strategy in place it’s very possible. And you can choose to pay for advertising if you wish.

I’ve learnt so much through social media. I’m careful about which accounts I follow so that I’m the first to know about updates (@mosseri, @pinkstormsocial, @creators are good for Instagram updates BTW).

Obviously there is a great deal of misinformation on social media so it’s worth being super aware and mindful of the content you are consuming and sharing.

It’s always advisable to include educational content in your own social media strategy. When you do, make sure you’re not sharing fake news and clearly state if it’s your opinion, not fact.

I think it’s the responsibility of all users to make sure that social media is a safe and supportive space. But as we can’t change the actions of others, we can only start with ourselves and our own behaviour.

Ultimately, I don’t think we can blame social media itself for any horrible things that happen on it, it’s just the media through which they happen.

So I guess my point is: be friendly, helpful, educational, inspirational and supportive.
