As a social media manager, you may suspect that I spend most of my day on Facebook. That’s what social media managers do, right?

Well, to be honest, I’m not on Facebook ALLLLL day, sometimes I’m on Instagram (I like the aesthetics, OK).

Seriously though, when I’m working, a lot of my time isn’t spent on the actual platforms; it’s spent planning content (Google Sheet), creating content (Canva), writing copy (Google Sheet), scheduling content (LoomlyBufferLater) and analysing content (Google Analytics)

You see, there’s a lot more to it than posting on Facebook every day.

Of course there is the element of engagement which means that I do have to spend some of my time on each platform.

But in order to do this without disappearing down a rabbit hole, it helps to have a plan. Here are some things you may want to include in yours:

Timing is everything

Set reminders at certain times of the day to check social media platforms and engage with your followers

On schedule

Create a schedule for which platform you are going to check and what you will do, for example:

Instagram – like, share and comment on 3 posts of accounts you follow

Facebook – reply to comments on a post. Reply to a comment on a group that you have joined as your page.

LinkedIn – like and comment on 3 posts by someone you follow

Twitter – reply to comments, retweet 2 tweets and quote retweet 1 tweet

Focus, focus, focus

If you want to spend a bit longer on specific platforms, allocate a day for each and take 30 minutes each day to really deep dive into your engagement. Set a timer on your phone and STOP when it tells you to.

One really useful top tip is to turn off notifications on your phone. This way you won’t get distracted by the beep, boops or tings.

It’s time to plan

I created a plan which I found really did help with increasing engagement and getting me involved in the social side of social media, whilst keeping my boundaries. I’ve been thinking about turning this into a download. Is this something that you would find useful?
